Founded by Roberto Garrone’s grandfather, who migrated from Monferrato to the Ossola valley in the early 1900s, Cantina Garrone has become a linchpin of the region’s viticultural revival.

Roberto, who honed his enological skills in Alba during the 1980s, returned in the early 90s to rejuvenate the family winery alongside his father. Together, they began revitalising ancient vines of Prünent, the local Nebbiolo clone, and expanded their operations by collaborating with local micro-grape suppliers, akin to running a private cooperative.

Today, Roberto and his son Marco manage three hectares of vineyards and source grapes from 80 micro-producers, specialising in the indigenous Prünent grape. Their winery in Crevola-Dossola and the aging cellar in the historic Cà d’ Matè in Oira – once the great-grandfather’s home. Here, they produce five red wines, primarily Nebbiolo-based, a Merlot-based Tarlàp, and a Chardonnay.

The region

Valli Ossolane
To the north of Alto Piemonte, in the Alps themselves, Monte Rosa, at 4,634 m, is the second-highest mountain in Europe. It protects the region from cold northern winds and storms. The Sesia River flows down from the Alps and neatly bisects the area. The denominations of Gattinara, Bramaterra, and Lessona lie to the west of the river, while Boca, Ghemme, Sizzano, and Fara lie to the east. The small vineyard area of Valli Ossolane is 90 kilometres north of Gattinara.
