Canavese

The Ivrea moraine

Canavese is the name of the region that includes Caluso and Carema but stretches far beyond these two important wine centres to include 106 communes. As the area is large, it is difficult to generalise about viticulture here, though rainfall is significantly higher than in southern Piemonte at an average of 1,100 millimetres a year. This has been a benefit in the many dry seasons during the last two decades. Soils are generally rocky and sandy with little limestone or clay. Canavese DOC Nebbiolo requires the wine to be made with a minimum of 85 per cent Nebbiolo. Canavese DOC Erbaluce, the dominant white variety, must be 100 per cent Erbaluce. Producers are free to choose how long they wish to age these wines before release.

Northern Piemonte: Erbaluce di Caluso DOCG.
